You Will Need

• A computer with an internet connection

Step 1: Go to Google homepage

Go to Google’s homepage at www.google.com

Step 2: Type in key words

Type in key words related to your search. Try to be specific without including too many words.

Google generally ignores very common words like “how.” If a common word is essential to your search, put a plus sign in front of it. Otherwise, just leave it out.

Step 3: Add quotes

Put quotes around any phrase in your search. This tells Google to look for words in a specific order. Quotes are especially helpful with names.

Instead of putting quotes around your phrase, you can do the same thing by putting dashes between the words.

Step 4: Narrow search

Narrow down your search by adding additional words or phrases. Try to think of unusual words that are specific to the thing you’re looking for.

Step 5: Searching range of numbers

To search within a range of numbers, type a low number and high number separated by two periods, with no spaces. For example, if you want to find something between 100 and 200 dollars, type dollar sign-one hundred-dot-dot-dollar sign-two hundred.

Step 6: Use "Advanced Search"

To further refine your search, click “Advanced Search.” Here you can specify languages, file formats, dates, and other characteristics.

On the Advanced Search page, you can also filter out any results containing “adult content”—including graphic images or video—by clicking on “Filter using SafeSearch.”

Step 7: Use different words

If you’re still not finding what you want, start over with different words or phrases.

That’s it—you’ll have what you’re looking for in no time.

Although rarely stated in Plain English, search engines do not like and do not trust unpopular web sites!

This sounds extreme, but starts to make sense if you think about it from the search engine's perspective. Search engines evaluate millions of web pages and display them in order of relevancy. In the past, search engines have played a continual cat and mouse game with thousands of webmasters who try to 'trick the engines' or 'beat the system'. Given the rewards of a good ranking, some webmasters would create thousands of computer generated pages hoping to trick the search engines into assigning them a good ranking. These pages would look bad to a human, but would occasionally rank well. This happened more and more, and engines started to fill up with 'junk' listings.

Around this time, search engines started to discover that link popularity was a very effective way to weed out 'junk' pages and a good way to judge a site. Link popularity is very difficult to abuse (a webmaster would have to control tens or hundreds of sites located on different servers). Also, search engines found that judging a site by who links to it is one of the best indications of site quality. After all, not many webmasters make a habit out of linking to bad or less than useful web sites.

Although search engines don't come right out and say they don't like unpopular sites, it's easy to read between the lines...

Sometimes called inbound links, backlinks are the lifeblood of Search Engine Positioning. In order for a website to be on the top of search engines like Google without the webmaster having to pay big money for advertising, the website has to have a large number of backlinks. Backlinks are links on one website that lead back to another website. The more established, high quality, and high Page Rank the website that contains the link has, the more power it has to help the linked website with its search engine position. If the website that is getting backlinks gets many High Quality and High Page Rank backlinks, the better the chance it has of being in a high position on the Search Engines.

How does a webmaster go about getting high quality backlinks to his or her website? There are many ways this can be done. Some people advocate writing and submitting articles, posting on forums, making comments on blogs. Others talk about submitting their website to various Internet directories. One directory that has an excellent reputation is called DMOZ, or the Open Directory. This directory is probably the most respected directory online today. The websites it contains have all been placed there by human editors; there is no automation to this directory. The only drawback that's been discussed about this directory is that it takes so long to have a website included.

Another way that many people build backlinks for their website is to use Social Bookmarking websites. A Social Bookmark is a website that usually has a very popular 'community' aspect to it. Users sign up and create profiles on the sites that contain photos and information about themselves. They then can save bookmarks of favorite websites which can be itemized by 'tags', which are one or two word descriptions of what the sites contain, and these bookmarks can be saved to a list that's private or can be listed publicly, so that everybody can see it.

With the advent of what is known as Web 2.0, gaining backlinks is easier now than in any time in the history of the internet. Most sites now have an interactive quality to them nowadays. Readers can often sign in and create profiles. They then are often allowed to post comments on the stories or articles on the website or blog. In many cases, the website or blog owner responds to these comments; thus making this section of the website or blog a conversation.
